Second Water Main Break Leaves 6,000 Without Supply in Sør-Varanger

A second water main failure struck the municipality of Sør-Varanger overnight into Monday, leaving roughly 6,000 subscribers without running water, according to NRK. The municipality says the breach has been located and crews are on site carrying out repairs.

Deputy mayor Tore Fredrik Nilsen told NRK that the outage affects Bjørnevatn, Sandnes, Hesseng and Skytterhusfjellet. The municipality has also asked residents in central Kirkenes to cut back on water use so the local reservoir is not drained, and a boil water notice remains in force.

Why it matters

The disruption reaches well beyond household taps. Kirkenes Hospital, the only hospital in eastern Finnmark, has moved to red alert, and Finnmarkssykehuset has restricted admissions. NRK reports that the hospital is receiving water from emergency tanks.

Acute patients across eastern Finnmark who do not need to be treated in Kirkenes first are being sent to other facilities — either Hammerfest Hospital, about 500 kilometres away, or Tromsø, roughly 800 kilometres away. The distances underline how thin the medical cover becomes when a single supply line fails in this part of the country.

A repeat failure on the same stretch of line

According to the municipality, the leak is tied to a subsea pipe in the water distribution network and sits in the same area as the previous break. That earlier incident is the benchmark the deputy mayor is using when asked how long the current outage might last.

Nilsen told NRK that the timeline hinges on whether replacement parts can be obtained. If the components are found, he said, the work should move as quickly as it did last time — possibly very fast, or perhaps a day or two.

The boil water notice will not lift the moment the pipe is fixed. Nilsen said testing must come first, and he expects four to five days after repairs are complete before the advisory can be withdrawn, because water samples have to be taken and checked.

Schools, kindergartens and service buildings shut

Several public buildings are closed while the supply is down. NRK lists Sandnes and Bjørnevatn School, the Kirkenes refugee and competence unit, and the Hesseng multipurpose centre among them.

Six kindergartens are also shut: Villaveien Nature Kindergarten, Rallaren Kindergarten, Sandnes Kindergarten, Knausen Kindergarten, Hesseng Kindergarten and Skytterhusfjellet Kindergarten.

Residents in Kirkenes are being asked to ration water and avoid unnecessary use, in line with the municipality's appeal to protect the reservoir.

What to watch: whether the needed parts arrive quickly, and when the first water samples are taken, since both will determine how soon normal supply and safe drinking water return.
